Compensation and Benefits

Salary is competitive and negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications. This is a CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position.
  • Area of consideration is limited to on-campus, state funded employees only.

Job Summary

The Associate Dean will assist the Dean in directing and overseeing the College of Arts and Humanities. The Associate Dean reports directly to the Dean of the College and acts on behalf of the Dean in her absence and when otherwise directed to do so by the Dean. The Associate Dean advises and consults with the Dean on matters that pertain to the governance of the College, budget and development efforts. The Associate Dean serves at the pleasure of the President.

Essential Functions
  • Supports and assists the Dean in advancing the mission and vision of the College.

  • Collaborates with faculty and staff from within the College and across campus to provide leadership in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing programs that improve student academic performance and/or persistence to degree, including: participation in recruitment and outreach events and activities, administration of the College's Honors Program and its relationship to the Smittcamp Family Honors College, responding to student issues and concerns, and other related student success matters that require the Dean's oversight.

  • Directs, supervises, and evaluates the College's Advising and Support Center and its three SSPs; keeps current of best practices in advising and is responsible for tracking and supporting CAH's attainment GI 2025 goals, thereby ensuring timely graduation of CAH's students; serves on committees dedicated to initiatives promoting student success.

  • Supervises the College's Communications Specialist.

  • Assists students with their issues and deals with student academic discipline cases.

  • Assists the Dean with the administration and allocation of the College's revenues and expenditures, and helps maintain and update the College's budget.

  • Assists the Dean with enrollment management and course schedule.

  • Works with Outreach on recruitment, admissions, and Preview Day.

  • Oversees the College's London study abroad program and advises faculty on submitting other study abroad proposals to CGE.

  • Co-directs and serves as Editor of The Press at California State University, Fresno.

  • Oversees the academic portion of the online Liberal Arts degree completion program.

  • Oversees the Laureate Lab and the Philip Levine Reading Room in Madden Library.

  • Organizes and hosts six Academic Decathlon lectures each fall, and speaks at two competitions in January and February.

  • Assists the Dean with onboarding new faculty each fall semester.

  • Assists the Dean in interviewing candidates for faculty positions.

  • Assists the Dean with Rank/tenure/promotion reviews annually of dozens of tenure-track faculty as well as reviews and range elevations of dozens of 3-year contract lecturers.

  • Serves as ex-officio member on the College's committees and interacts with various division offices and departments, such as Academic Affairs, Faculty Affairs, and Facilities Planning, as directed by the Dean.
  • Provides communication linkage with departments and programs on personnel and academic issues, and is knowledgeable about and ensures implementation of current University policies and procedures.

  • Oversees CAH faculty laptop program and assists Dean with CAH labs.

  • Coordinates the RSCA program at the College level each spring.

  • Encourages faculty to apply for IRA grants and maintains cordial relations with ASI.

  • Facilitates department program reviews, accreditation, and assessment.

  • Oversees all college facilities, including office space, and equipment in consultation with College's departments and programs and in accordance with University and College policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure optimal work and learning environments to meet the instructional needs of the faculty, students, and staff of the college; works with Facilities Management.

  • Supports the Dean and the College's Development Director in development strategies and activities, including oversight of grants and contracts proposals for the College's programs; manifests a deep understanding of the value of the Arts and the Humanities, and is able to convey a passion for the disciplines and create meaningful relationships with potential donors of the College.

  • Attends Summer Arts community board meetings during the academic year and events during the month-long program in the summer; handles issues with students and facilities during and right after the Summer Arts program; works with the Dean on the application to host Summer Arts from 2024 onward.

  • Attends the College's lectures, exhibitions, and performances when possible.

  • Represents the Dean on various committees and at University or College functions as requested by the Dean; participates actively in meetings of the Academic Affairs Leadership Team.

  • Performs other duties related to the general operations of the College as assigned by the Dean.

Required Qualifications
  • Has earned the rank of Full Professor.

  • Is a current, full-time faculty member in the College of Arts and Humanities.

  • Has served for the past two academic years as a Department Chair or in a MPP role, dealing with the pandemic; demonstrated understanding of the complexity of decision-making as we transition to a mix of face-to-face and online classes in Fall 2021 and beyond.

  • Commitment to inclusivity and diversity, consultation, and faculty governance.

  • Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed scholarly publications or creative activities within the past four years.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ethical, creative, and effective problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated performance in making sound independent judgments.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially with faculty, staff, students, and administrators.

  • Superb interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage in meaningful ways with persons of varied backgrounds, on a variety of topics pertinent to Arts and Humanities.

  • Commitment to the overall success of College and University initiatives.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Currently recognized nationally or internationally as a scholar or artist.

  • A deep understanding of the academic budget, and demonstrated experience with the equitable and effective use of funds.

  • Contributions to the enhancement of the quality of academic programs and the promotion of excellence in teaching, research, and service in cooperation with faculty, staff, students and community partners.

  • Positive record of student mentoring and advising and familiarity with the policies and procedures governing student academic life.

  • Understanding of and experience with the instructional use of digital technologies.
