Summary:
The Dean is responsible for all School of Humanities & Social Sciences (SHSS) academic departments and programs, their personnel, fiscal resources, and initiatives. As a member of the Provost's leadership team, the Dean provides well-informed, engaged, and collaborative leadership at the school and university levels. Drawing upon excellent interpersonal and communication skills, the Dean inspires others to do their best work, facilitates and supports diversity and inclusion, and establishes an environment that encourages curricular and pedagogical innovation. The Dean is responsible for the vitality of academic programs within the SHSS and for supporting a culture of collegiality, continuous improvement, and evidence- and data-based decision-making. Strategic budgeting and advancing institutional strategic priorities are key responsibilities of the Dean, who must have a visible, accessible, and student-centered approach to leadership. Developing and sustaining internal and external partnerships and collaborations that support academic program development and student success are expected. The Dean holds a faculty appointment in the department most closely aligned with their doctoral discipline. The Dean is a member of the Academic Affairs Leadership Council and reports to the Executive Vice President & Provost.

Education/Experience:
Ph.D. in a relevant humanities or social science discipline and a distinguished record of experience in academic leadership roles, or equivalent combination of education and experience. A research, teaching, and service portfolio commensurate with the rank of Professor is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Essential Functions:
  • Lead the SHSSs student success efforts to ensure ongoing improvement with regard to student graduation and retention rates as well as progress towards the elimination of equity gaps (including, but not limited to, ensuring that the SHSSs academic programs provide clear, achievable pathways for student success and that all SHSS curricula are aligned with these potential pathways).
  • Informed by data and evidence, assess and evaluate current programs, projects, and staff assignments to ensure relevance and create a vibrant academic environment.
  • In keeping with fiscal responsibilities and ensuring program relevance, support and provide leadership for strategic enrollment management in the SHSS (including enrollment projections, scheduling, program capacity, and program development). Direct the development of course schedules that reflect educational trends, student demand, and faculty expertise. Review enrollment demand prior to the start of each term and take action to add, cancel, or modify course offerings as appropriate.
  • Conduct ongoing program reviews per the universitys schedule, and prepare proposals for new programs and program modifications that enhance enrollment and program quality in the SHSS.
  • Ensure effective faculty recruitment, retention, and continuing professional development including particular attention to recruiting and retaining faculty of diverse backgrounds.
  • Provide leadership that encourages faculty to develop pedagogically, intellectually, and organizationally in order to play a central role in student learning, scholarly and creative productivity, and leadership within the campus community.
  • Support recruiting, enrollment, advising, mentoring, retention, and completion of degree requirements for students in a timely manner.
  • Maintain appropriate assessment data, prepare reports, and verify compliance with accreditation standards for eligible programs in the SHSS.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to promoting a campus culture that values inclusion and diversity.
  • Seek, develop, and sustain effective partnerships with external and internal constituencies in support of existing or proposed new academic programs and initiatives.
  • Build external relationships and sustain resource development. Be alert to the identification of opportunities for partnership and leverage them appropriately to enhance the SHSSs access to a range of resources, including internships, professional development opportunities for students and faculty as well as financial support for the schools programs.
  • Represent the School and the University through participation in community and corporate activities, meetings, and events across the region and the country.
  • Actively promote interest in the University wherever and whenever possible.
  • Remain current in the field and active in the profession.
  • Actively follow trends in higher education, particularly the challenges facing private universities, and contribute to related campus initiatives including marshaling resources and leading faculty in addressing the challenges.
  • Work with the Schools faculty, staff, and students to cultivate a climate of intellectual excitement and creative vitality; work to build bridges among the members of the community writ large; and serve as a decision-maker and creative problem-solver in achieving SHSS goals.
  • Contribute to implementing and assessing the Universitys strategic and annual plans and help to realize goals.
  • As an active team player, collaborate with the Academic Affairs Leadership Team in strategy development, policy setting, and problem solving to serve effectively the Universitys needs.
  • Serve as a vital partner in the recruitment and retention of students and contribute to efforts to improve alumni engagement.
  • Manage the SHSS budget. Set appropriate budget priorities (operating and capital) in preparing budget requests and, as budget allows, recruit and recommend qualified new faculty and staff to meet the needs of the SHSS and the University.
  • Provide focused, inspired leadership at the school level to support the strategic priorities of the university.
  • Collaborate with appropriate stakeholders to identify and implement solutions on an ongoing basis in support of strategic planning, strategic budgeting, and business process improvement.
  • Participate on working groups, shared governance committees, and external higher education committees and groups as assigned.
  • Support and lead assessment, accreditation, and program review efforts within the SHSS to ensure ongoing program vitality.
  • Work collaboratively to align fiscal planning with strategic priorities by ensuring strong data- and evidence-based decision-making.
  • Meet regularly and work collaboratively with the SHSS leadership team in pursuit of goals.
  • Engage in grant-writing and other scholarly pursuits in support of the academic program and student academic experience at the University.
  • Attend all University Faculty/Staff meetings, relevant academic department/school meetings, and other meetings and gatherings as requested.
  • Participate in all convocations, including commencement exercises.
